Here at Pentreath our Community Development Workers act as a link between Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities and the mental health services available in Cornwall. We work with individuals, families, carers and the community to raise awareness about mental health and challenge the stigma attached to it.

Our aim is to empower Black and Minority Ethnic people and enable them to have a say in the way mental health services are provided to them. As well as acting as an advocate for our clients we also provide support and advice to overcome any issues that may have an effect on their emotional well-being and mental health.

In order to bridge the gap between Black and Minority Ethnic communities and the mental health services we hope to remove language barriers, ensure a shared understanding is in place and that all mental health staff have access to training in Black and Minority Ethnic issues.

Working alongside our CDWs are our Family Support Workers. Their job is to provide support in setting up running group activities for Cornwall’s BME communities as well as promoting the opportunities to attend training.

We are pleased to have initiated Cornwall’s Respect Festival which celebrates the diverse communities of Cornwall and takes place annually, usually in August. The Community Development project also runs our very own Colourful Women’s Network and International Men's groups which provide stimulating activities for men and women from BME backgrounds.
