About Us

About Us

Pentreath is a Cornish mental health charity supporting individuals with emotional and mental health difficulties to overcome barriers and thrive. We aim to help people believe in their potential and achieve personal and vocational goals—regardless of the challenges they face.  We work in partnership with many organisations in Cornwall, including services commissioned by the NHS and Cornwall Council.

Since 1991, Pentreath has specialised in mental health and has supported thousands of people across Cornwall. Our team is deeply experienced, with approximately 75% drawing on personal mental health lived experience. This enhances empathy and trust, particularly for those who have felt misunderstood or dismissed. We continuously adapt our service based on ongoing feedback, ensuring relevance for those facing discrimination—whether due to socio-economic status, geography, or mental health stigma.

Pentreath supports people from across Cornwall to improve their health and emotional wellbeing, develop social and emotional skills, and make positive transitions into education, employment, or volunteering. Through personalised, one-to-one support delivered by trained Advisors, we will help people build confidence, manage their mental health, and take meaningful steps towards their future.

Advisors provide person-centred and tailored support that focuses on:

  • Improving mental health and emotional wellbeing using a variety of tools and techniques
  • Developing social and emotional skills
  • Encouraging healthy lifestyles and healthy relationships
  • Building confidence, motivation, and self-esteem
  • Setting personal goals around education, employment, or training
  • Accessing opportunities in their community (e.g. local groups, employers, services)
  • Building long-term coping strategies and reducing reliance on clinical interventions

Being ‘adaptable’ is our guiding value. We offer bespoke 1:1 support, delivered where people already feel comfortable—home, community centres, cafes etc. We use trauma-informed tools and co-develop support plans that reflect individuals’ goals, cultural background, and accessibility needs. Regular reviews ensure flexibility and responsiveness. This autonomy ensures participants feel in control and remain engaged.

Our entire service is voluntary at every stage. We never pressure engagement.  We combine this respect for individual choice with active support: we help them attend appointments, apply for services, or just show up for sessions. This approach empowers participants while giving them the tools to make future decisions challenge barriers themselves.
